Zenprise launches smart e-mail management software for SMBs.
30 January, 2006 By Chris Talbot |

Zenprise has released smart e-mail management software for the small- and medium-sized business (SMB) market that is capable of diagnosing and offering solutions to e-mail problems when they exist, but it was also designed to help IT administrators be proactive.
The software was originally released for enterprise customers back in September, but according to Ahmed Datoo, vice president of marketing at Zenprise, many of the same e-mail problems that enterprises face are also being faced by SMBs. Datoo quoted statistics, saying 40 per cent of the total 120 million Microsoft Exchange user base is made up of SMBs, so there's a huge market for e-mail management software for the mid-market and below.
"There are any number of different things that can go wrong that can prevent you from the simple task of sending and receiving e-mails," Datoo said.
In SMBs, there are often only one or two IT staff members (at best), and they're forced to become jacks-of-all-trades and masters of none, Datoo said. The point of the Zenprise software is to offer them Exchange expertise in a box.
IT administrators can get the software up and running in about 15 minutes, Datoo said. It enables them to quickly resolve even the most complicated Exchange problems, leaving them free to concentrate on other problems, as well as strategic projects they often don't have time for, he said.
"The way the product is built is we've actually taken all the knowledge and all the expertise from the world's brightest Exchange experts and put it into software," Datoo said.
An administrator will take an e-mail problem, run several tests to find the underlying problem and then work to solve the problem -- of which takes a significant amount of time, Datoo said. With the Zenprise software, it's like having 100 of the smartest Exchange experts in a box, he said.
"They like the concept of the knowledge of the experts embedded in the software," Datoo said.
The software looks to find out where a problem or potential problem is and then offers a solution based on all of the knowledge it has of Exchange and of the systems it's monitoring, he said.
"We've automated the whole process," Datoo said.
The software is available now. Pricing is based on the number of users in the company, and it's capble of supporting up to 1,000 users. Pricing starts at $2,500 (U.S.) per year for a company with 50 users.
